i am trying to use collaborate in canvas, but rather than create a new google doc I want to link/invite others to collaborate in an exisiting document. Does anyone know if this is possible
Craig, yes, you can always add people to an existing Google Doc, but it won't add it to "Collaborations" in Canvas. It will however show up in your Google Drive, their Google Drive (the people you shared it with), and will also show up when you go to submit an assignment. I have students who do this all time time (forget to start a document in Collaborations) and it's not a big deal. They just have to ask for the gmail addresses of the people they want to add to the document. Here are the directions - How to share - Drive Help.
Hope this helps!
Hello Craig Tunnicliffe...that's an interesting question, and I don't think you can! I suppose one thing you may consider doing is create a link to the document taking advantage of Google Drive's ability to create a shareable link, and set it so that anyone with the link can comment/read/edit, and then just link to that document from within your course somewhere. (I'm assuming you're the instructor of the course; if not, then you'd have to come up with a plan B.) Maybe others have another suggestion, but it appears within the Canvas environment directly the best you can do via COLLABORATIONS is create a new document. So, a shareable document in Drive may be your best alternative.
