Hello all,

I wanted to see if anyone had some feedback they could share on how they manage courses?  Currently we have a centralized content model where our courses are copied from a central "Master" course out to a given term.  Right now, I have a cool process shared by some other users called the "Hammer of the Gods".  However, is there a way that we can create both a shell as well as import content all at once?

Also, does anyone gate assignments by date?  Is there a way to apply this across several hundred courses every 6 Weeks without having to go into courses manually to assign dates? 

Just looking for ideas on how to manage some of our current processes.  Thanks again for the help.

I'm not going to be any help in answering these questions, but I am going to share this with the Canvas Developers​ group (back-end programmers) in the Community to see if they have any insight into your questions. Hope someone is able to help!

Yes, we use this model.  This is a completely automated process. We export data from our SIS.  We use this data with the Canvas API to  to create shells,  and then to add the content from the master shell to the newly created shell using content migrations​

This is what we were thinking about doing.  Did you use code to automate this?

Yes, we use code to do this.  The process is completely automated. 

T-14 days before term start, the course is created, content migrated from master shell,  and teachers added for all courses in the SIS for the term.  This process runs every 30 minutes for until the term end date.  If a course in the SIS is deleted, the corresponding course in Canvas is deleted

T-3 days before term start - students are added.  This student enrollment process repeats every 30 minutes until the end of term.  If a student is unregistered, the enrollment is deleted.  If the students drops after term start, the enrollment is changed to Inactive.

T-12 hours before term start - all courses are published

At the end of the term, grades are pulled from Canvas final grades  and pushed to SIS

When the grade for a student is pulled, the enrollment for that student it the course is changed to completed
