SIS Import Overview (Admins) Video Script

In this video, you will learn how to use CSV files to manually import data into your account. Before you begin, make sure your CSV files are correctly formatted. The Canvas Community and API Guides include information about correctly formatting CSV files. Verify the headers are correctly formatted and all required columns have information.

In Canvas, click the Admin link in Global Navigation and the name of the account. And then click the SIS Import link in Account Navigation. On the SIS Import page, click the Choose File button and select your file or ZIP files to upload. In the Import Type drop-down menu, select your file type. Available options include Instructure formatted CSV or zipfile of CSVs, Banner Grade Exchange Results XML, and IMS Enterprise Specification XML zip.

Before starting the import, there are two additional options to consider. To delete all data for the term in the account, except the data in the file(s) you are uploading, select the “This is a full batch update” checkbox. To override any changes made in the user interface, such as a user changing their name, select the Override UI Changes checkbox. Once you have finalized your settings, click the Process Data button to start the import. Depending on the size of your files, the import could take some time. A status bar will notify you of the import’s progress and you can leave this page at any time without interfering with the import.

When the import has finished, Canvas will display information about the imported data. If there were errors in the file, Canvas will display information about the errors. To access documentation to help format your files, click the “please see this documentation” link. Correct the indicated errors in your file and import again. If the file was imported without errors, Canvas will display a success message and indicate how many items were imported.
