Whitney Kilgore (iDesign) and Adrienne Gauthier (Dartmouth College) will be hosting the "Instructional Designer Meet & Greet" on Wednesday morning 7:45-8:45am at the breakfast location. Where that specifically is located is not yet known, but we'll be grabbing some real estate off the side like last year. Look for signs and follow our hashtag #InstCon #IDMeetup
P.S. It will be a clown-free zone, as promised.
During the first breakfast of InstCon2017 Whitney Kilgore (iDesign) and I (Dartmouth College) sponsored an instructional designer "meet and greet" icebreaker for ID-types. It was a fun success where we were able to facilitate introductions through a fun bingo/spy game to help folks get connected moving forward into the rest of the conference. The sticker badges helped us all identify each other later on and it was nice to have an instant buddy in a room full of strangers.
We'd like to do this again this year and would like feedback. We're looking for icebreaker ideas, location suggestions, interest in extensions to the breakfast (ancillary events?) and wondering how we can get it more advertised (in the electronic program perhaps?!)
Brainstorm and comment away! We'll be keeping tabs here as we get closer to the proposal deadline and then moving closer to July.
Best,
Adrienne & Whitney
P.S. We promise, there will be NO clowns at our meet-up.
I'm so glad to see that you're going to hold this meetup again at IC18, @Adrienne_J_Gaut (sans clowns, yay!). I've shared the discussion with our brand-new InstructureCon 2018 space to broaden its exposure.
thanks! I had looked for the InstCon space when I posted but I don't think it was created/up yet. I'll edit my post and tag it as well.
...I noticed there is already something with clowns on it...a creepy clown...clowns are creepy...I might be projecting...
@Adrienne_J_Gaut , I'm hoping to be able to make it this year! Last year, I had another commitment at the same time! Getting pretty excited for InstCon18!
@Adrienne_J_Gaut , are you looking at doing this during breakfast on Wednesday?
Most likely! The idea is to have an active networking event at the start, to carry conversations and new friend meet-ups throughout the week.
I hoping to get the approval to come to InstructureCon this year and I would love to meet up! Please keep us posted.
I would definitely be interested! As an ID I have lots to share and lots to learn! I loved the discussion last year and I believe I will be attending again this year.! Would love to see this happen again.
I really enjoyed last years. I can't wait for this years...
This sounds like a lot of fun! I'd be super interested in joining in.
Great idea - interested in participating. Please keep me updated.
This will be my first time attending Instructure Con (or should I say, InstructureCarn). There are 3 of us from my university (Frostburg State University) attending and we are new to Canvas. I would love to participate, please keep me informed.
Andrienne & Whitney,
We just switched to Canvas at Chippewa Valley Technical College. I have participated in something like this at a QM conference and it was awesome to connect with other ID types. I'm totally in.
I can't offer any suggestions as I'm a Canvas newbie, but I am with you on the "no" creepy clowns. No clowning around... we have a saying we use at our house "funny like a clown" or funny hahaha.... I think Randy gets it from the show Goodfellas. I never watched it - so had to Google it to understand what he meant.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.
Jodi
Sounds super fun! For totes, I'm in. 🙂
...anyone have any "game/icebreaker" ideas? We have an hour or so during breakfast -- I think we'll do the same as last year for timing. We're starting to design the "meet and greet" part of it. Something quick yet meaningful. Something people can wander in/out of and still get to know a few people, etc. or identify themselves throughout InstCon as "ID-types".
Post your ideas!
I've always enjoyed "speed dating" style Meet & Greet games. Questions are always fun!
I like the idea of seeding questions. There could be a Google Doc or something where people can submit ideas ahead of time.
I've also had some success in the past with ID'ing some common topics/issues/interests, creating table tents, and then people can wander over to topics that interest them. (Also a good idea to keep a few blank ones on hand because other great ideas always emerge from participants day-of.)
I didn't go to InstructureCon last year, sounds interesting. I would come.
Wonderful! I will definitely be interested in attending.
Registration, reservations, and flight are booked and confirmed! Keystone here we come!
Thanks for helping organize this! As a Canvas newbie, I'm looking forward to meeting folks and learning from you all!
I'm also an InstructureCon newbie. This sounds wonderful! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.
UX focus group "horror" stories are always fun. 😜
UPDATE! "We're Not Clowning Around! ID Meet-up at InstCarn"

This is my first year with Canvas and the convention. I'm an instructor, but our team is small (about 9 people total) and we are all working together to build and design courses from the ground up. I have admin access to our instance...would this be out of my realm of expertise to attend? It sounds delightful!
Personally, I think it would be great for you to attend. I would also like to extend an invitation to meet with you and learn more about your team and offer up any advice that I could and learn from you as well!! Connect with me via text or email!

Will do! Thanks for the invite!
Looking forward to the ID Meet & Greet!! Will there be or could there be additional meet-ups during the week?
So glad to see some many newbies. I've joined the ranks of newbie this spring. Hope to see you all there!
Who is going to join us Wed morning at breakfast for #IDMeetUp! Find us near the breakfast tent from 7:45-8:45am for some fun networking to get to know other IDs/LD types at #instcon!
Sounds like fun. Unfortunately out of town.
