To Our Amazing Educators Everywhere,
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
We are looking to delete hundreds of unused sub-accounts in our system that were created during our initial implementation. I seem to remember that there was a way to run a report, edit the report, and then use the SIS import tool to import the file back into Canvas to have the sub-accounts deleted.
Can anyone confirm that this is possible, and if so, how I would go about doing this?
Thanks!
Jeff Morgan

I have not personally deleted sub-accounts this way, but I believe you'll just needed to run the Accounts CSV (in the Provisioning report), change the status from "active" to "deleted", and then upload the revised file using SIS Import.

SIS Import formats: SIS Import Format Documentation - Canvas LMS REST API Documentation

@tdelillo , thank you for taking the time to answer my question and provide the detailed information. I am going to try your suggestion on our Canvas test system. I will update this thread once I have finished to let everyone know the results. Thanks!
@tdelillo , you were 100% correct in your reply in how to accomplish this. I simply ran the Accounts provisioning report, changed the status from "active" to "deleted" for the sub-accounts I wanted removed, ran the file through the SIS Import tool, and our unorganized, messy sub-account structure was dwindled down from 328 to the 8 sub-accounts needed. Thanks again!!!
Awesome, so glad it helped! I knew my obsession with reports and the SIS Import format documentation would pay off
What happens when the import directs Canvas to delete sub-accounts that still contain courses? Do they become orphaned somewhere? Thanks!
