Ability to write on image files in SpeedGrader

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

In SpeedGrader, we cannot annotate (pen or text) on top of an image file like we can in a Word document. It would save considerable time during grading if student image files were able to be marked directly in SpeedGrader.

@9910503 ‌, I certainly am in favor of annotation tools being available for image submissions!

While not fully-aligned with your specific desire for an image annotation function in Speedgrader, I did want to share that a screen-recording function within Speedgrader was recently prioritized for development over the next 12-15 months at an event called Project Khaki. Ideally, it will allow an instructor/teacher to provide voiceover feedback to students while screencasting their image submission (or any other content the teacher wants to make visible on their screen during the recording). Currently, I can achieve this using an external tool like Jing (example here), but it will be very helpful to eventually have an internal Canvas function to allow this type of feedback. A related feature idea contains further discussion about this need: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/3986-screen-capture-with-audio-as-a-comment-option

It would be incredibly helpful if this could be connected to https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/3174-configure-image-files-in-speedgrader-to-fit-the-window" m.... Otherwise, it could be difficult to add comments due to having to zoom in/out.

If this feature is implemented, please make it compatible with Windows tablets like the Surface Pro. Currently, writing on pdfs is not supported and it's next to impossible to mark up graded work with a Surface and stylus. Thank you!

If you want to use a Windows tablet/stylus for inking documents, vote for this feature.

We use images/videos for assignment submissions in a clinical experience course and I currently do them out of Canvas since I can not annotate them in Speed Grader like a Word doc. Adding this capacity to Speed Grader would be a significant benefit as my current method is quite limited.

Looks like this feature may be coming in the next release.  From the current beta release notes:

"DocViewer annotations can be added to BMP, JPEG, JPG, PNG, TIF, and TIFF images in SpeedGrader and the Submission Details page. Large images are scaled to a lower resolution so the entire image can be displayed without having to scroll."
