When faculty use the "Users must post before seeing replies" setting on a discussion, they intend for the student to post a meaningful post prior to seeing posts from other students.
However, if the course setting for "Let students edit or delete their own discussion replies" is enabled, students can (and do) post a blank or single letter post to get around the "Users must post before seeing replies" setting.
Please consider adding one of the following features to help faculty more easily recognize and plug this loophole:
