I think it would be helpful for there to by an option to sort the assignments in the gradebook by the order they are in for a module. This would be much easier for many of our instructors to see all students progress at the same time and see which assignments need to be graded for a module rather than scrolling to the different assignment groups. This would be especially helpful for competency based education since we cannot really assign due dates because of how students start and progress through a course.

The two default options for sorting are by due date and by assignment group.  But you can also drag and drop them and arrange the columns in any order that you would like.  Simply click on the column heading cell and drag it left or right to the location where you would want it.

Side note, I tend to arrange my assignments in module view in sequence order from when the assignments are due.  So the default sort in the gradebook by due date is sufficient for me.

Hi  @timothy_maw

Being OCD, and also liking to be able to better track student achievement, this is what I do...........

  • Build assignment groups named after my modules, and sequenced in the same order as my modules.
  • Place all module assignments in their appropriate module-named assignment groups.
  • Drag-n-Drop those assignments in each module to reflect the order they are in in the modules.

This reorders your gradebook to reflect your module structure, with the added advantage of providing an total score for each module. As snufer pointed out above, you can then go into the gradebook and drag the assignment group total columns into the proper location if you want.

What many folks do not realize about Canvas, that is different from many other LMSs, is that you mostly set up your gradebook using the Assignments index page.

I hope this helps,

KLM

That is nice to be able to do but sometimes we still need to set up assignment groups in order to have the weighted options. Dragging the column works but it can take a fair amount of time and due dates aren't really something that would work for us since we can't put due dates do to being a competency based school. I know we can work around it but I feel like it would be easier if a view to see the gradebook as the modules would be beneficial.

Hi Tim,

Out of curiosity, how would you propose it be handled when an assignment is listed in more than one module?

I know on the student view the assignments can be grouped by module. I can see it being arranged in a similar way.

I see this feature as a valuable "view option" for Instructors provided you don't change how the assignments tab creates the gradebook and the sub-totals/weighting calculations.

It is important for Instructors to know how to construct a gradebook first--so that it is calculating grades correctly. After that, having view options and sorting within the gradebook is a convenience instead of making it more confusing.

I agree that it will be more of a view option for instructors. Students are currently able to view all of their grades in a module view and it would be very helpful for our instructors to be able to view the gradebook in a similar manner.
