To limit the number of announcements interrupting the school day we want to be able send an alert through Canvas to an individual student and have the alert immediately show up on his or her iPad. These would be things like, Jasmine, Please check at the attendance office after class. Or Johnny, get your butt down to the principal's office immediately!
A message sent through Inbox doesn't alert them.
We would appreciate any help or ideas.

@ghancock If the users enables notifications through their device, they can set an alert for when they receive an inbox message. Since it's a push notifications, you can't set frequency, it's just immediate.
This is how you do this for:
iOS: How do I set Notification Preferences in the Canvas app on my iOS device?
Android: How do I set Notification Preferences in the Canvas App on my Android device?
Just remember that the device must allow push notifications for the Canvas app as well. This is generally found in your phone or tablet settings.
Also, once enabled on the phone, you can set you notifications for "All" mobile devices on the web:
