Force-submit a Classic Quiz in Canvas when using Respondus LockDown Browser

Hey,

I’m encountering a frustrating issue with Canvas Classic Quizzes while using Respondus LockDown Browser, and I’d appreciate any insights or confirmed workarounds:

Problem description:

  • I use Classic Quizzes in Canvas, requiring Respondus LockDown Browser.

  • When a student starts the quiz but then stops actively working the quiz timer keeps running.

  • The attempt remains in “In Progress” status in Canvas; it does not auto-submit.

  • As a result, the quiz stays open indefinitely in Canvas, and the student isn’t marked as submitted.

Steps I’ve already tried:

  1. Time Limit less then time used by the student: Timer keeps running.

  2. Available/Until date (both overall and via moderation): Timer still ticks; no auto-submit.

  3. Change access code: No effect.

  4. Modify Individual Until time in Moderate This Quiz: still no forced close.

  5. Workaround: Log in as the student via Respondus LockDown Browser, then manually click Submit.

My questions:

  • Is there any official or built-in “Force Submit” or “End Quiz” button for instructors in Classic Quizzes?

  • Does Instructure or Respondus support a way for instructors to forcibly end or submit an individual student’s ongoing attempt?

  • Is there a better, more scalable workaround than having to log in as the student via Respondus?

Thanks in advance for any advice, insights, or confirmation that this is a known limitation or requestable feature!

I don't use Respondus LockDown Browser, but unfortunately that can happen even without it, as the automatic submission after the "available until" date is done on the browser's end not on Canvas' back-end.

One thing that sometimes appears for me is an "outstanding quiz submissions" banner on the moderate page that lets me submit late quizzes.
You mentioned the moderate page, but perhaps you missed the banner as you weren't looking for it.
