In order to use the anonymous discussion feature instructors must turn on the option to allow students to create discussion topics. We have actively discouraged instructors from allow this option to be checked because if there are graded discussions in the course, the option to create a new discussion topic confuses students. They end up creating a new discussion "topic" rather than a "reply" in the graded discussion topic. This creates havoc for instructors when they try to grade the discussion. I'm not really sure how other institutions use discussions but this would an issue for our faculty who may wish to use anonymous discussions and also have graded discussions.
