[Rubrics] Create a student-accessible rubric for self-assessments

Our nursing and OTA staff are using self-assessments to help students evaluate their confidence in the skills they are learning for certification. The idea is that they can take this assessment and choose if they want to share it, see what things they need to brush up on and reflect on their experiences. Currently they are doing this on paper but as we go to more online course work, they would like to integrate this as an online activity within a course.

The peer review rubric as it is set up now would work, but we also like the model of the tests you take on social media that tell you that you're 90% geek!

Self assessment is very important in students understanding where they are at and where they need to go next.  It would be great if they could access the rubric in the same way that peer reviewers can.

Self-assessment is an effective instructional and assessment strategy. Canvas is losing its competitive edge when compared to other LMS in the area of assessment tools. For example, New Quizzes still requires a 24-hour wait period to generate reports. It appears this has been an interest since 2016.

It would be nice if Instructure gives a sign if this idea is getting in the pipe line, or why it is not being considered.

Just about any indication from Canvas on this idea would be good. It's been going around since 2016 and has a lot of support.

Problem statement:

Have the option for the instructor to allow students to self-review when submitting an assignment with a rubric. Right now, only a peer review is allowed. This would give the instructor more information.

Proposed solution:

Similar to peer review: "If the assignment has a rubric attached, you are only required to complete the attached rubric for the peer review to be considered finished." The student submits their work, clicks view rubric, and self-reviews where they think their work is on the rubric. Instructor can then see student's response - same way they can see a peer's response.

Problem statement:

We love the Peer Review option in Assignments, but many of our teachers would love the option for students to self-grade an assignment. Students need the practice of evaluating their own work, self-reflection and comparing how the graded themselves to their peer review and teacher's review.

Proposed solution:

Along with Peer Review option in assignments, teachers should have the ability to assign students the ability to grade/review their own work as well as a peer.

Hi @kasey -

There is an existing idea that may be similar to yours!

[Rubrics] Create a student-accessible rubric for self-assessments

After reviewing this long-standing thread, if you feel your proposal would be met, we'll merge your request into the comments. If it's different, can you add a few more details about what you're looking for? That would help the Community Team and Product Team clearly note the differences between the ideas.

Hi @kasey  -

I hope you are doing well!

If you are unable to provide an update regarding this idea by August 8, we will merge this thread with the one mentioned earlier. This will help the Community Team focus on current Ideas. If you need more time, that's okay too! Providing an update before that time would be helpful and appreciated.
