Extra time added to existing quiz session doesn't instantly update remaining quiz time for students

This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 11/26/24.

Description

Adding time to an existing new quiz session doesn’t update the remaining time on the student’s view instantaneously. The remaining time updates roughly after 5 min of adding the extra time.

In case the quiz’s time limit is less than 5 min, additional time won’t be added, as it won’t reflect on the ongoing session before it ends.

Expected Behavior

Extra time should reflect on the student’s attempt as soon as it’s added.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisite: a course with at least one student enrolled.

1. Create a new quiz with a time limit set to a period longer than 5 min.

2. Login as the student on a different browser, and start your attempt.

3. Once the attempt starts, add extra time to the ongoing session from the quiz’s Moderate page.

4. Notice that the remaining time only updates after 5 min of adding the extra time.
