Decimal comma is automatically changed to a decimal point in numeric answers in Classic quiz attempts

Canvas

This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment as of 4/23/25.

Description

When a student attempts answering a numeric question with a number that contains a decimal, the comma decimal separator is automatically changes to a point decimal. This causes answers to be marked as incorrect in language packs that use a comma decimal separator.

Expected Behavior

Decimal separator should stay as it is entered in the answer box.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Pre-requisites: Have a course with a few enrollments. Make sure the language pack is set to one that use commas as a decimal separator, for example Deutsch.

  1. Create a Classic quiz with a numeric question.

  2. Make sure the answer contains a decimal, for example 2,5. (Observe that when creating the quiz, it does accept comma decimal separators in the possible answers field)

  3. Save and publish the quiz.

  4. As a student start taking it.

  5. Attempt answering the numeric question with a decimal number: 2,5.

  6. Observe that the comma decimal separator is automatically changed to a point decimal separator when clicking outside the answer box.

  7. Submit the quiz, observe that the answer is marked as incorrect.
