To Our Amazing Educators Everywhere,
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week!
I do not seem to have an edit button in my Canvas Studio. I would like to edit the videos I make. Any ideas on how to get the edit button?
@ProfMartin ...
As I had mentioned to you in a different discussion topic that you and I were a part of, I don't have the link any more to "Cold Storage" that included those directions...so I could not give you that information. However, I'll try and explain the process that I've used...which is quite clunky. This assumes that you are creating a video using the online video editing tools in Canvas Studio. It also assumes that you are doing this on the same computer ... as you cannot do this on multiple computers, from my own experience. Here goes:
I hope this will be of some help. Like I said...it's pretty clunky...and it's the only way I know to get back to this screen. Take care, stay safe, and be well.
Hello and thank you for replying. Unfortunately I cannot get past step number 6 on your list. I do not have the option to go back to recording. The only options I am given in the window that pops up, is to either close or minimize the window, or save or cancel my recording. My question about why my version of canvas Studio does not have an edit button still has not been answered. Do you know why some versions of Canvas Studio do not get an edit button? Does it have to do with our version being the free until 2021 version? Please let me know how I can enable and edit button or if this is at all possible. I'd also like to know why we do not have an edit button that would be great. Thank you! 🙂
Hello @ProfMartin ...
I guess I am a little confused by some of the things you are stating in your most recent reply. Specifically, I'm not aware of a "version" of Canvas Studio. There is the "Screen Recorder Launcher" that Studio uses to do screen captures, and I have version 2.0 installed on my computer. (I found this in Windows 10 by clicking on the Windows button at the bottom left corner of my screen, clicking on the "Settings" cog wheel icon, clicking on "Apps", and then scrolling down the list until I saw "Screen Recorder Launcher" ... which I then single-clicked on to see the version. I've had that version since 8/16/2019.) I'm also confused when you say "our version being the free until 2021 version". Can you clarify what you mean by that?
Could you also explain (step by step) how you are initially recording or uploading the video to your Studio library and how you would like to edit it once uploaded?
Also, out of curiosity...what web browser are you using? Are you using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox? If you are using an up-to-date version of one of these browsers, have you tried the other browser to see if you get different results? Have you tried clearing you cache/history in your browser? See How do I clear my browser cache on a Mac? or How do I clear my browser cache on a PC?. Once you clear your cache, close the browser, then restart the browser. Log back in to Canvas to see if you still are experiencing the same issues.
Looking forward to hearing back from you soon!
1. According to our Canvas Admin, a version of Canvas Studio was made free to Community Colleges until Jan 2022. Could this be why there is no edit feature? I am only guessing on this. Process of elimination.
2. Yes, have tried multiple browsers, cleared cache and cookies, screen recorder launcher is all up to date, etc. Still no edit feature nor do I get the Back to Recording option you are mentioning.
3. See the 3 screenshots of the process I am doing. Image 1 is the screen where I check the screen recorder version, Image 2 is when I am recording so you can see the red record button there. IMAGE 3 is where it shows the Upload box with options is where the EDIT button is supposed to be, according to the tutorial videos I have watched. This is also step 6 in your instructions. This is where I cannot move forward because, as you can see, there is not BACK TO RECORDINGS option to click! It's merely a Preview window with no such option.
My question: Where is the EDIT button? Image 3 clearly shows there is NO EDIT BUTTON, however, in the tutorial videos, it clearly shows an EDIT button at this point in the process. Why is there no EDIT button? All I see is REDO or CANCEL (see IMAGE 3).
Hello @ProfMartin ...
Thank you for the extra detail. It appears that you are doing everything correctly...yet you are not able to see the link in my Step #7 that I referenced earlier. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the agreement that your Community College has with Instructure and utilizing Canvas Studio. That question will need to be addressed with someone at your school such as a local Canvas administrator or someone from your school's Online Learning/eLearning department. Those folks should be able to get in touch with your school's assigned Customer Success Manager (CSM) at Instructure to know exactly what limitations might (or might not) be in place right now with your Studio setup. Wish I could be of more help, but I think a conversation with folks at your school would be worthwhile. Good luck!
Hi and thanks for your help. You've been great.
My Canvas Admin says everything should be enabled. She is at a loss. I am not sure if she's taken it further up the ladder. I will ask again. Oh well. I guess until that gets sorted at higher levels, instructors at my college will not be able to use Studio to its fullest and students will definitely lose out. They will get the bare minimum that we can give them with the limited version of the app. Thanks again! Have a wonderful semester!
Did you find anything out? I have one teacher that this is happening to.
Hi drandas1,
I am so sorry to hear that a teacher of yours is having the same problem. At least I know it's not just me!
So far, my Canvas Admin has not heard anything. She put in a trouble ticket and is waiting for their reply.
We are set to attend a Canvas Studio training sometime in late Sept/early October (kinda late, but it'll do).
I will definitely update when I find out more. Very frustrating and annoying. Sigh....
We actually fixed it by uninstalling the Screen Recorder Launcher and reinstalling it. Now the edit button is working.
Good morning,
I am glad to hear you solved the problem! Did you do it on your own computer or was it done by IT on the entire system? If you are able, I'd love for you to give me a walk-through. Thanks!
Hi- were you able to get the edit button back? I am having the same problem- I don't see anything about editing Studio videos in the Canvas Guides, so I'm wondering if this is no longer a feature.
Ok I fixed this for myself and wanted to update in case others have this problem in the future:
I uninstalled Screencast-O-Matic on my computer, then reinstalled it and chose an option "Install Just for You" NOT "Install for all users on this computer"- it said something about admin privileges. Then the edit button popped up for me the next time I opened it!
Hi Lindsay,
yes, I was able to do the same. I completely forgot to come back here and post. My son actually helped me figure it out. I wish this info had been addressed by Canvas Studio.
