We’re excited to announce a new capability in Canvas Catalog that brings greater control and flexibility to your promotional campaigns. With this update, Catalog admins can now create true one-time-use promotional codes, enabling secure, targeted, and high-impact outreach without the risk or manual overhead.

Why This Matters

Until now, managing exclusive promotions often meant relying on workarounds or close manual oversight. That created friction and uncertainty, especially for institutions running time-sensitive or externally funded campaigns.

Now, you can launch promotional efforts with confidence. Each one-time-use code is automatically deactivated after a single redemption. This ensures precise access control.

Imagine offering 50 exclusive enrollments to alumni at a reunion event, knowing with certainty that each code can be used only once and only by one person. This update empowers you to do just that.

How It Works

When creating a new promo code, you’ll now find a Usage dropdown with three options:

  • One-Time Use: The code is valid for a single redemption, then automatically expires.

  • One Time Per User: Reusable across users, but each user can only redeem once.

  • Unlimited: No redemption limits, ideal for broad access campaigns.

Along with this update, we’ve enhanced the Unlimited option to give you greater flexibility. You can now configure:

  • Max Use Per User: Set the number of times an individual user can redeem the code.

  • Max Total Use: Set the total number of times the code can be redeemed across all users.

These settings allow you to shape open promotions with more nuanced access control. For example, you can limit a code to 5 total uses or allow each participant to redeem it up to 3 times.

If someone enters a one-time-use code that has already been used, they will see a clear and friendly message explaining that the code is no longer valid.

The setup is simple. The enforcement is automatic. The entire experience is seamless.

  1. Log in to your Canvas Catalog admin interface.

  2. Navigate to the Promotions section.

  3. Create a new promotion, choose your preferred Usage type, and configure your redemption settings.
