I'd like to be able to sort my announcements. Some are more important at the beginning of the semester.
Betsy Garfield -- great idea. You're absolutely right -- many announcements need to remain visible but promoted in prominence at various times in the term.
This idea sounds like it fits with a feature request that is already on Product Radar in the Canvas Studio.
That feature request is Announcement Area ReDesign.
Canvas likes to consolidate similar ideas together to make it easier to gauge interest and follow, rather than being spread out across several idea requests. You may wish to go to that feature request page, vote up the idea, provide any additional use cases, or otherwise comment.
James has directed you in a great direction. You may want to add your use cases and votes to that idea.
I can see where the ability to order announcements would be very helpful. This is an idea that we have seen quite a few times in the community, but it has never gathered many votes. Here are some past (archived, you may need to join Cold Storage to see them) ideas that you can read for history.
Also, since I'm referring you to older ideas, you may be curious about How does the feature idea process work?
The Announcements functionality in Canvas seems primitive compared to other platforms (such as Sakai). Being able to view announcement post dates (especially delayed/scheduled post dates) and being able to sort by these post dates would be extremely helpful. This lack of functionality is one of the reasons I stopped using Canvas several years ago. I have recently given Canvas another try, but am very surprised that the Announcements area still has not been improved in all these years, after so many requests from users, dating back more than 5 years.
Is there any chance that Canvas designers will improve the functionality and usability of Announcements?
(I apologize for posting this in more than one thread, but it seemed relevant to both topics...)
Is this a sort for a teacher or student? If teacher are we looking to sort by creation date or publication date (maybe even end date)?
I would like to see the default sort order for announcements to be based on posting date, not creation date.
I frequently create announcements with delayed posting dates. However, when students view the announcement, both on the Announcements page and on the course home page, it displays with the date that I created the announcement, not the date it went out to students. This causes a few problems:
Rachelle Tannenbaum I completely agree. This is not the expected behaviour. I think most people assume that the announcement is created when it is posted. Before it is posted, it is more like a draft version. The date that the draft version was created should not be visible to students.
Update: Now I'm finding that I get differences in the listed dates, even from one section to another. Below are screenshots from two of my classes this semester. In both cases I posted an announcement on February 27 with a release date of March 6. Both screenshots were taken while in "student view." As you can see below, in one case it says "posted on" Feb 27, and is sorted according to that date, while in the other it says "delayed until" March 6, and is sorted by that date. So in the second one, the sort date is accurate, but the wording is still confusing since a student isn't going to know why the announcement was "delayed."
This is all very frustrating....any insight, suggestions, etc. would be very much appreciated!
Great idea Betsy Garfield and something that I thought I would not miss from D2L. It looks like it has been a couple of years since this was last explored in the Canvas Community and hopefully we can get more attention to this request.
We need to be able to change the dates and sorting of Announcements. When I import "boiler plate" announcements from a previous class I cannot currently put them in the order I want them to appear. This sort of functionality seems like a no brainer. Also, when I import announcements from one of my previous classes they appear with a big "U" where my user photo typically appears - not sure how to fix this?
