Students should be able to see the feedback instructors leave on essay questions on quizzes /exams. For example,
If you give a 50 question exam with one essay, the student does not receive full points on the essay and you , as the instructor, want to leave feedback. Currently the student cannot see the feedback because the quiz setting is for students not to see their responses. The issue is if the setting currently is set for students not to see the responses to their questions (which questions they got wrong), then they also will not see the feedback that an instructor leaves on the essay. This should be an independent function. There should be a setting so that students can see feedback on an essay but not the multiple choice/true/false/matching type questions. This is essential for student learning. I understand why the response setting is off and does not allow students to see their incorrect answers (due to copious amounts of cheating in the online world), however, an essay is different, in that it is like a mini paper. Students need to learn from their thought process in writing the essay, what applications they missed etc. It is a great learning tool. For students to not to see the feed back from an essay is a missed teaching and learning opportunity.
