Quizzes.Next: Add option to display questions by group in Quizzes

In many exams, there will be a number of questions that refer to an image, a scenario, a case study, or data of some sort.  Currently, the easiest way to display this is all at once.  However, that means a lot of scrolling up and down, which students are reporting they find confusing (they easily lose track of where they are in the exam, and it increases the chance they might miss a question).  The only alternative (displaying one question at a time), means that the image/scenario/case study/data needs to be repeated with each question, which is cumbersome and confusing in its own way.

It would be very useful to have the option to display one question group (image/scenario/etc. and related questions) per page.  Our faculty and students would LOVE to see this feature added to the Quizzes function!

Chunking is very important for various learning styles.  Viewing all questions at once, or only one at a time doesn't allow for the nuance necessary to strike a proper balance in many cases.  Instructors can currently employ groups to determine randomization, so to some degree Canvas is already well aware that groups matter when it comes to questions.  What is true for instructors is also true for students.

Hello Canvas Family,

This is a feature we are considering for future development in the Modern Quizzing Engine. With a lot of thought and careful consideration, we are exploring ways to make this possible. There will me more to come as things progress.  We will not likely release this feature in the next six months, but it's on the table.

I love the idea that this idea is being considered for implementation. Nursing uses this type of structure frequently for scenarios or problem-based learning. I've resorted to the "duplicating in each question" technique, but as Frederique commented, this is very clunky.

This idea was moved from Under Consideration stage (no longer in use) to the Product Radar stage.

The other option to add to this (that I don't see is currently available) is to keep the order of questions in the group in sequential order from how they were inputted instead of randomizing the order. Especially, when doing a case scenario that clinical decision making can build from one question to the next it makes it very difficult if the last question in the group is presented first-then the information is very mixed up and confusing for the students.

The Radar idea stage has been removed from the Feature Idea Process.  You can read more about why in the blog post Adaptation: Feature Idea Process Changes.

This change will only impact the stage sort of this idea and will not change how it is voted on or how it is considered during prioritization activities.  This change will streamline the list of ideas 'open for voting', making it easier for you to see the true top voted ideas in one sort, here.

This is a great idea and would definitely be beneficial for course developers and students. Even if the questions are not related (ie. image, case study, etc. as mentioned by OP), if you have a large number of questions in an assessment it is good to break them down into manageable groups rather than one long list of questions, but not to the extent of individual questions.

I don't think the question groups is necessarily the right tool for this function, it serves some other useful purposes but may not be the best point to split the assessment. I think an 'insert page break' option would be a very clear, simple solution.

Possibly add some optional validation criteria such as requiring students to answer every question before moving to the next page or allowing them to continue without answering questions but show a notification that not all questions are answered?

Our Product Team reviewed some of our oldest feature proposals recently, and this thread was identified as one that they would not be able to include in their current or future plans. While we appreciate your proposal, we also want to be transparent about the likelihood of something like this making it to production.
