[ARCHIVED] Accidental duplication of an assignment

Hi there, 

A mistake has been made where two assignments have been set up in Canvas, but they are actually the same assignment. Students marks have been provided - therefore some students have received results against the first assignment and other students against the other. 

The accidental duplication also means there is an extra percentage added to the total for the whole subject. How should this be managed? Is there a way that the two assignments - or at least their grades - can be merged?

Hi  @anna_cameron .  This is one of those situations where different individuals may have various suggestions.  I will let you know my initial thought and others can provide additional insight.  The first thing that comes to my mind is just to excuse the grades for whichever assignment was not used by the student.  You can type "ex" into a grade cell and that grade will not count against the student.  In your case, you could do this for the first assignment for some students and the second for others.  There would still be two grade columns, but since the assignments are a duplicate the students would only have one of the two calculated for their total.  This also would allow the students to see their submission and your comments in the future.

This document describes excusing a grade, How do I change the status of a submission in the Gradebook? and states, 

"The Excused status indicates that the student has been excused from making a submission. Students are not able to submit excused assignments, and excused assignments are not calculated in the student's total grade. You can also excuse an assignment by typing EX in the assignment cell."
