[ARCHIVED] Announcements and external feed

I am a teacher and just setting up my classrooms.  I want my students and parents observing to receive emails that contain my announcements.  I know I need to have my course published first.  Do the parents and students need to click on the "external feeds" to receive the emails when I post announcements?  Do I need to click on that when I post an announcement?  I watched your video, but there wasn't an explanation about what "external feeds" was used for.
