In certain fields, there are some globally recognized certifications that pretty much everybody accepts as being a valuable and valid certification. Is there anything like that for Instructional Designers? Basically, if you were looking to hire an Instructional Designer, what certificate would you expect them to have or to soon obtain after hiring?
Would Illinois Online Network's (ION) Master Online Teacher Certificate be considered one of those? What about the Instructional Designer Certificate Program from Online Learning Consortium (OLC)? Others?
@John_Lowe , I don't believe the ION Master Online Teacher certificate - Illinois Online Network | Tutorials | Master Online Teacher Certificate - would provide enough education and experience for someone whose entire job was being an Instructional Designer.
Per their website, "The Master Online Teacher certificate is designed for faculty, administrators, and staff members interested in making online teaching an important part of their academic careers, or who wish to take a leadership role in online learning at their institutions." A number of faculty at my school have worked through and obtained this level of certificate from ION and while it helped them develop a better understanding of what went into good online design and how to be a good online teacher, I don't believe it would qualify them with enough skills or education to be an Instructional Designer.
Hope this helps!
