[ARCHIVED] Are your Instructional Designers faculty or staff?

In your organization, are your Instructional Designers considered faculty or staff as their primary designation?  I know many IDs also teach, so I'm not considering that ancillary function in my question, but rather is the primary job function of an Instructional Designer position considered a staff position or a faculty position.

At FIU Online our Instructional Designers are staff. However, we do have some that teach as a secondary role within the university.

Since there is no real correct answer for your question as you are asking for feedback, this might be better suited for a discussion. 🙂

Hi John Lowe,

At HutchCC we have a team of 3 Instructional Technologists and 1 Instructional Designer who are staff. Some do also teach a small amount online, but they are hired primarily as Instructional Designers. I know many times Instructors become ID's over time due to their knowledge and experience with the LMS, but at our college the ID's are hired from the outside.
