When I am grading assignments on my iPad in the Canvas Teacher app, I can seemingly use all the functions (the pencil, eraser, highlighter), however, now when I try to make a comment the Canvas Teacher App shuts down. This has happened at least 15 times (I keep trying!); I have looked to see if the app needed updated (no) and I have updated iOS on the iPad.
Any suggestions?

This crash has been addressed in the 1.9.1 release that just went live. Please update and let us know if you continue to have issues.

Hi csteinbergand welcome to the Community! I don't have first-hand experience with this, but recently saw this post about student app crashes, iOS 13.1.2 crash bug?. In the thread, @narmstrong from Instructure indicated that an updated Teacher app will be released soon. Since the student app update included a patch for crashing maybe the teacher app release will include a similar patch? I don't know for sure but you might try contacting Support (see How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor?) to let them know what you are experiencing. They may be able to let you know what will be addressed in the next teacher app release.

I am having the exact same issue. I’ve been grading via my iPad for more than a year without any issues. The app just started crashing yesterday, but only when I try to add a comment to an assignment, all other functions appear to work just fine. I’m wondering if there is an incompatibility between the app and the newest iPad software update? I updated recently and I think yesterday was the first time I graded assignments since the software update.
I'm sorry to hear that your app is crashing. Please make sure to submit a ticket from Canvas Teacher (How do I get help with the Teacher app on my iOS device?) and ask that your local Canvas admin escalates the ticket. The more information the Mobile Team has about these crashes, the easier it is for them to diagnose the issue.
I have the same major problem. I updated to iOS 13.1.1 on iPad Pro 10.5. I also updated Canvas Teacher app on iPad to 1.9.0. Immediately after these updates, the app ALWAYS CRASHES when trying to add a grading comment that’s connected to a highlight (or other tools) in an assignment that has been uploaded as a Word document.
A tablet with a pencil should be an AMAZING option with the Teacher app. Instead, the teacher app is currently UNUSABLE as a grading interface for iPad.

My only suggestion in this case is to completely uninstall the app and reinstall it. If that doesn't work, just like Kristin suggested above, I would contact your local tech support to submit a ticket to Canvas support.

This issue is happening again. I've deleted and reinstalled my Canvas Teacher app. Another colleague is having the same issue. Please advise what we need to do to submit comments on student work without receiving an error. Thanks!
Hi April - I don't know of a quick solution, unfortunately. I would start by sending a ticket. How do I view Assignments in the Teacher app on my iOS device? Your local Canvas support person will be able to escalate this to Instructure.
