Account Management 101 - First Day Questions and Concerns
1. Account administration is simple but lacks significant features including the ability to assign and view specific Permissions that have been granted to specific users
2. Account creation does not system generate "first log on" passwords
3. Notification of an account creation via email is all well and good, but the too basic notification does not communicate the fact that there is no "password" (the user must enter the password) to log onto the system
I would like to know how to view and set permissions for specific user accounts i set up?
Greetings and Welcome to Canvas! ![]()
Users are assigned permissions based specifically on course or account roles. When you create an account you do NOT actually set whether they are a student or an instructor; so you don't set their permission/role. When you add someone to a course you determine their "role" (ex: student, instructor, etc) and that "course" role is what then determines what permissions the person has for that specific course. If you need to give someone a higher level account role (this is more for Canvas Admins, Help Desk workers, not teachers and students) then you would go to the Admin Settings page and then click on the Admins tab. You can then add people here and define what "Account" role they have. If you haven't already, I'd definitely take a look at the following Admin Guides - Roles and Permissions
Hope this helps!
@bpanic ,
We are giving the Canvas Admins area a little bit of love (especially questions that are really, really old) and just want to check in with you. This will also bring this question new attention.
