[ARCHIVED] Canvas next Quizzes: Providing General Feedback on Essay question types

Not sure if this question has been asked, but this pertains to Canvas (next) Quizzes > Essay > Student Feedback > Provide General Feedback.

After I populated some general feedback, I previewed the quiz to see if the feedback did indeed show. However, upon student preview, I couldn't see the text nor images I had populated?

It is a known problem (that appears to be intentionally designed this way) that general feedback on essay questions is only shown after the question is graded. When you preview a quiz, your essay questions are not graded, and so no general feedback will be shown (and thus general feedback is only available for automatically graded questions in the preview). This is a problem for students because it means they have to wait until their essay questions are graded to see the general feedback.

To deal with this problem, some people will post general feedback in a separate document that students can access after the quiz (so that they don't have to wait for the question to be graded). We have also come up with this alternative solution.

If you follow the essay question with an automatically graded dummy question (0 points) that asks the students something like, "Would you like to see feedback on the previous essay question after the quiz?", then you can put your general feedback for the essay question in the general feedback for the dummy question. It clutters things a bit for the student, but it extends the ability of giving general feedback from the autograded questions to the essay questions as well.
