[ARCHIVED] Compiling a running percentage for many small assignments turned in over the semester

One of the assignments completed throughout the semester in my class is participation reflections.  These occur between 15-20 times during the semester, are completed using the Canvas discussion board, and are graded as either complete or incomplete.  Currently each reflection shows up in the gradebook as either C/I, and I am trying to determine if it is possible to create a running percentage the students can see?  For example, many students have completed 7 of 7 reflections so they would see a 100% for their reflections assignments.  Other students have only completed 2/7, so they would see a 28.6%.  I believe seeing this percentage would help increase awareness regarding how this assignment impacts their final grade in the course.

Hi  @gosnellw1  - Yes, this is do-able courtesy of the magic of assignment groups within Canvas along with grading those assignments. 

First, you will want to place all the discussions into their own assignment group, as covered here:  How do I add an assignment group in a course?  By default, every Canvas course has an assignment group on the Assignments menu item called Assignments.  This will add another one. It sounds like you have already created (and graded) all of these discussions, so this may involve moving these discussions into your newly-created Discussions (or whatever you decide to all it) assignment group.  This is covered here:  How do I move or reorder an assignment? 

After this, believe it or not...you're basically done!  By default, assuming these assignments have been graded, this is what your students who did 7/7 of the discussions will be seeing in their view of Grades at the very bottom of the page:

And this is what the students who completed 2/7 of the discussions will be seeing in their view of Grades.  Now, in this case, these students have NOT yet been graded on any other assignments, so note that Canvas simply places an N/A there. The main caveat here is that Canvas will not count any assignments that have not been graded yet.  But assuming those students you reference completed 2/7 discussions have been given a score of "incomplete," this will apply.  

The key, of course, is getting the grading done.  

But unless I'm misunderstanding something, that should do it.

I have everything set up as you mentioned. However, the reflection total at the end of the gradebook still displays a :smileyminus: for all students. The reading quiz total displays their average score so I was curious if the gradebook cannot totaling complete/incomplete assignments?

HI  @gosnellw1  - Sorry; I did not catch your replies until now.  The assignment group columns should be showing the score for assignments in that group only IF they were graded. Ungraded assignments will not be calculated within the grade. If you have weighted assignment groups, however (not sure if you do) Canvas may not be calculating those scores in the same manner that you are.  Be sure to check over the information here: How do I weight the final course grade based on assignment groups?  If you are using weighted groups, the simplest solution is to have all assignments within a weighted group be the same point value; otherwise, the math that is outlined in the blue area at the top of that page comes into play.  (And believe me, I have read and re-read that multiple times and it can still be confusing.)  

If there is just a dash showing in an assignment group total, however, that means that no assignments have been graded within that assignment group yet.  This is kind of hard to trouble-shoot, though.  But to answer your question, my experience is that complete/incomplete assignments DO get calculated properly within their assignment groups.  If an assignment is worth 5 points, for example, a "complete" is the equivalent of 5 points, and an "incomplete" is the equivalent of 0 points and they will be scored that way in the assignment group total.  (100% for a complete assigment; 0% for an incomplete.)
