I'm making a huge assumption here, but are you saying that you received an e-mail from the RMIT librarian through an e-mail client such as Outlook? If that is the case, it is correct that you wouldn't receive a copy of that e-mail message in Canvas. Canvas does not actually have e-mail. They have a Canvas Inbox (also called "messaging" or "conversations"), but it is not e-mail. The Canvas Inbox is used to communicate between you and other students and/or instructors who are enrolled in the same courses you are. My guess is that the librarian is not enrolled in the same course that you are, and so it would make sense that the messages from that person are not being delivered to you inside of Canvas.
All Canvas users can configure their own notification settings (via "Account" >> "Notifications") to receive copies of Canvas Inbox messages that are sent or received to their own e-mail address, however.
