Is it possible to export Question banks?

Not directly, no.  But you can export Quizzes and then if you import those quizzes back into Canvas they become a question bank.  Here is how.

• Create a Quiz
• Use the Find button to add all of the questions from the bank you want to export.  Save Quiz
• Go to Settings, Export Course Content
• Select Quiz and then export just that quiz with the question bank questions and download it

The file you have now has all of the questions in a QTI format zip file.  If you import it to a class in Canvas the process creates both a quiz AND a question bank.  Or if you wanting to import it into some other system it should work if that system can import QTI format.  Here is how to import it into a Canvas course.

• Go to the course and click Settings, Import Course Content
• Select QTI Zip for the type of item to import, select the file and import.
• If you just want the question bank you can just delete the quiz from the course.

This did not work for me. When I exported the quiz, which is pulling questions from a question bank, it did not export a QTI zip file. It exported a zipped folder that consisted or folders containing XML documents. Am I doing something wrong, or is this (exporting quizzes with question banks) no longer a feature?

So, if I've created one exam with, say, four sections, and each section pulls x number of questions from the associated test bank, will exporting the quiz recreate all four test banks with all of their questions?  Or, will it recreate one test banks with a pre-defined number of questions, based on x*4?

I wouldn't call this a solution. We should be able to export question banks.

This solution doesn't work for quizzes with question groups pulling from question banks. The QTI file is missing any information about the question banks so when you go to import the QTI file in the destination course, you get the quiz groups, but the linkages with the banks are broken. See attached screenshot. When I examine the contents of the QTI zip file, it looks like the export is referencing the bank with some sort of ID, but there's no corresponding question bank object anywhere to be found inside the export file.

This is happening with Classic Quizzes, I'm not sure if there would be a workaround that would involve migrating the quiz to New Quizzes. I haven't experimented much with that yet.

If you export the entire course, it includes the question banks.  One can import the IMSCC package with Select Specific Content chosen, then choose to import only question banks. But, you may not wish to include the entire course just to share the question banks, so it's not ideal.

FYI Question Banks are in the non_cc_assessments folder of the exported course file, each one containing objectbank.  I am only including this information because it took me a while to figure it out.  There's not a lot of information about QTI and Canvas IMSCC formats out there and someone might work out a way to include only the questions banks in an edited file; noting the images are in a different folder and that would have to be included too.

Right now you can't export new quizzes at all.  It's on the Product Roadmap for July 2023 but doesn't mention item banks, just quizzes.  I hope the Instructure engineers are working on exporting both or either, and choosing all or some.  Thank you Instructure for listening!

Yes, you can. Well, to be precise, you can copy them into a course from another course. This solution does not create a file that allows them to be shared.
