You can initially set up your Group Sets and Groups via the "People" page.  For example, you might have a "Group Set" called "Assignment 1" and then assign students to different teams within this Group Set (example: Team 1, Team 2, Team 3), etc.  Then, you might create a second "Group Set" called "Assignment 2" but you might decide you want your students in different teams for this assignment.  (Maybe you even name the teams Blue, Green, and Red.)  You can set up your Group Sets and Groups via these Guides:

Once you have your Group Set(s) created, then you can start to create your discussion topics that will utilize those groups.

How do I create a group discussion in a course?

When you select the Group Set name, Canvas knows how to set up your discussion topic into groups because you previously defined those teams within the Group Set(s).
