I'm using ann external tool which provides adaptive course material for a chapter. There are 3 topics and 2 assessments in that chapter which are bundled as a single assignment and deployed in my LMS. Now I need to grade students for the 2 assessments separately( two columns in the gradebook ). How can I do this?
Hello @vaidya_nikhil88 ,
Welcome to the Canvas Community! It sounds like you are doing some pretty cool stuff. To better help understand the issue as well as brainstorm solutions with you, could you answer a few questions?
1) Were the adaptive course materials added to an "assignment" or a "page"? An "assignment" will allow students to submit work for grading whereas a "page" is a container for information only.
2) How are students submitting their work? Are they turning in a physical versions to you, or are they submitting digital files to Canvas?
3) Do you have administrative rights to create "assignments" and/or "pages" or do you need a system administrator/content creator/curriculum designer to build these elements for you? I'm trying to gauge the word "deployed" :-). Sometimes classroom teachers are limited by what they can create on their Canvas courses.
Thanks again for dropping in with the inquiry. I look forward to working toward an answer with you. And if I can't help, there are so many amazing individuals in this community who come up with absolutely brilliant solutions.
Kindest regards,
Brandon
Hello @Brandon Risenhoover,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
To answer your questions,
1. The adaptive course material is added to an assignment (in my case, the assignment has 3 topics and 2 assessments).
2. My learners will answer the assessment in the external tool which in turn is passing the scores for the 2 assessments. Now as the 2 assessments are part of one single assignment in my canvas. I'm unaware of how I can send or my learners can see their scores for each of the assessments in their LMS grades (the external tool does not show the score to my learner in their tool).
3. Yes, I have administrator rights too. By deploy I mean, the external tool allows me to select multiple chapters and from a textbook and add them as a single assignment into my LMS.
Please let me know if I have provided you with the right information. I'm new to canvas.
Your help and feedback are much appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Nikhil Vaidya.
Hello @vaidya_nikhil88 ,
Thank you so much for the extra information. After viewing several articles like How do I add an assignment using an external app? and robyn.reese's post, "Using Third-Party Tools (or EduApps) in Canvas," it appears that the option to divide embedded third party app assignments into multiple Canvas grade book instances is not possible at this time.
For future assignments it might be best for your purposes to only select one assignment from your adaptive course material per Canvas assignment. This may cause extra leg work on the front in setting up the assignment, but it would provide the desired number of grade book entries for better student feedback.
I would also suggest posting this issue as a feature request in the Ideas section of the Canvas Community. You can read about this process here: How does the feature idea process work in the Canvas Community?. After doing a quick search, I couldn't find an idea which matched your situation.
Maybe @kblack knows of another way to navigate this situation :-). Don't be discouraged. I hit road blocks all of the time. I feel truly lucky to have such an amazing group of educators and savvy technical folks who are always willing to help fin alternate routes. Let me know what you think. I'm always happy to help.
All the very best,
Brandon
Hello @Brandon Risenhoover,
Thanks for your reply.
I have gone through a lot of articles to see if I can do this. Seems its not possible as of yet.
Yes, I will try to propose this as ann idea.
Thanks a lot.
Hi @vaidya_nikhil88
I may have a solution for you on this one, though it won't do exactly what you are looking for it to do.
If you set up outcomes for your course and set up the 2 assignments as 2 different outcome rubrics. Then add both of these outcome rubrics to the assignment you'll be able to mark the test using it and the points will show up in their learning mastery gradebook as two separate assignments.
This guide explains how to use them, I'm on my phone at the moment otherwise I'd do a step by step for you myself. https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10711-67952724565
Hope this helps,
Stephen
Hi @Stephen Taylor,
Thanks for your time to reply.
I tried to do as you suggested and works out for me in a way. But I will end up creating a total of 3 assignments which might create a problem when syncing grades from the external tool.
I'm trying to assign outcomes that I created to modules in LMS which has this one assignment. Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks,
Nikhil
