[ARCHIVED] How do I grade discussions if I'm posting to a specific section?

I know that I can separate my discussion boards by section by using the "Post to" option, but when I do that the "Graded" option is disabled. Based on what the Canvas Instructors' Guide says, this shouldn't happen, but it does. Is there a way to fix this?

Hi Judith -

I discovered this just the other day with a colleague! Instead of selecting "post to", go towards the bottom and adjust the "assign to" features (How do I assign a graded discussion to a course section?)

Tech support at my campus indicated that unless I use the "post to" feature, my discussion boards will be visible to all students in both sections of my class. I want to limit discussions to students within a single section, which is why I chose the "post to" option. I think that using the "assign to" feature lets me set up different availability and due dates, but still includes all students in both sections in the same discussion.

I could be wrong, though. This is the first time I've tried to use the discussion board, so I'm flying a bit blind here.

I think there's a difference between the graded and ungraded discussions. The Post To options is for ungraded while the Assign To is for graded.

How do I create a discussion as an instructor? 

If you want to create a section-specific discussion that is not graded, select one or multiple sections in the Post to drop-down menu [4]. Graded section-specific discussions must be created as part of the Graded option in the next section.

If you want to create a graded discussion and you have added sections in the Post To field, the Graded option will be unavailable. You must remove the sections from the Post To field before selecting this option. You will be able to add sections as part of the graded discussion options.

OK, I'll try it. My students understand that I'm learning this stuff in an abnormal situation, and I think they'll be patient with me.
