[ARCHIVED] How do I grade inactive students in Speedgrader?

Hi, I am trying to grade an inactive student in my course. While I can see them in my gradebook (tagged inactive), I am unable to update their grades. They do not show up in speedgrader either. Another issue I noticed is that three of the assignments which I had graded months earlier are now showing blank cells. When I reactivate the student, the grades are visible again. The rest of the grades are visible. I'm not sure what's happening here.

I don't have an answer for you, I'm just linking to the relevant documentation from the Canvas Instructor Guide that states that you should be able to edit the grades. That way others looking at this question don't have to go looking for it.

One thing I would ask is that you double check that the student is inactive and not concluded. In the gradebook, it has the word "Inactive" or the word "Concluded" next to their name, although the exact wording would change depending on the language of the user. The reason I ask this is because for concluded enrollments, the gradebook is read only and cannot be changed. That sounds like what you're experiencing. For inactive enrollments, you can still edit the grades.

I do not know why the grades from months ago would disappear. Are you using grading periods?

Thank you for your reply, James. I did go through both these documents before I posted my question here. I have double checked and the tag next to the student name does show 'inactive' and not 'concluded'.

As to the mystery of the missing grades, I'm stumped. We use term dates and the term is still active. When I reactivate the student, the grades become visible. This is happening with just 3 assignments. The rest are fine. However, I'm unable to edit any of them in the gradebook and the student doesn't appear in Speedgrader at all while inactive.
