Judy,
While you have the editor open, click into the area where you type your content so that you can see the cursor blinking.
(If using a PC) press ALT + F9 or (if using a MAC) press ALT+FN+F9. [important to make sure you click in the text box first and I actually had to use ALT+FN+F9 on my PC laptop].
This will give you access to the editor's menu bar. Select "Format" and then "Strikethrough" and then begin typing.

The keyboard shortcut for PC no longer works, at least inside an announcement I am trying to edit.

It is a lot easier than that...for those that might not feel comfortable editing HTML. With the current RCE (Rich Content Editor), you can simply highlight the text you want to strikethrough, and then you can select the "Format" menu, and then select "Strikethrough". In this example, I've highlighted the word "hello" and am ready to select the option in the menu:
