Is there a way to restrict students' ability to create conferences? I still would like to use conferencing as part of the course, but only instructor-created conferences. Thank you!

Hi @humanitiesatcae ,
Thanks for your question! The ability to create conferences is a permission that is set for the entire account, so I recommend checking in with your local admin. I hope this helps!
Thanks,
Emily

This would be really helpful, except I don't have a local admin.--I am an
independent teacher. I created the account to run my classes online (due to
COVID) and was dismayed to find that I'm not an admin and have no way to
become one...any thoughts?
Thank you!
Hi again, @humanitiesatcae ,
In that case, there unfortunately isn't a way to fully restrict students' ability to create conferences. However, because of the way permissions are set, you as the instructor have full management of conferences in the course. So, you will be able to delete any conferences created by students in the course. You could also try hiding the Conferences link when you are not utilizing the tool with your students.
Thanks,
Emily
Hi @emily_allen!
Could you please explain a little more about hiding the Conferences link? I understand how to do it, but I'm wondering how I would direct students to a particular conference when I do use the feature. I feel like students would still be able to see the "Create Conference" button. ( I have a free account.)
Howdy, Canvas Community and Instructure Gurus!
Any chance of allowing admins and instructors to enable/disable this feature on a course-level, rather than a user account permissions-level?
Our school has certain courses where students are encouraged to create Conferences in their student groups, and other courses where students may accidentally create a Conference instead of joining an instructor-created Conference.
Allowing us to restrict the student's ability to create Conferences in the Course Settings (similar to the permissions at course-level on students creating new discussions) would be a huge help.
Thanks,
Heather
