This sounds like it might be an issue with an out-of-date browser, and since you mention that you're using a Macbook Pro, you're most likely using Safari to access Canvas. Supported browser versions are listed in What are the browser and computer requirements for Canvas? to see if the browser you're using is older than those listed; if it is, update as needed, and keep in mind that updating Safari requires an update to the MacOS itself.
