[ARCHIVED] Is there any way to tell what day and time a rubric has been completed?

For our courses, our students submit their name to an Assignment to declare that they have completed the course. Teachers then verify student completion by marking the Assignment and completing a rubric with an attached Outcome. We run an Outcome Report almost daily to check what new declarations have been completed as we have to report on them to an accrediting body within a set time period.

The problem is although the student submission has a date and time field in the Outcomes Report, the completion of the rubric is what we are really interested in and there is no date and time shown. 

Does anybody have any ideas on how we can regularly (daily) generate a report on these rubric completions that have a date and timestamp?

Hi Ben,

After the rubric is completed is a grade assigned?  Within a gradebook there is a history so if a grade is changed or added there would be a date/time record of it.  I don't know of an easy way to get that report, but there is an API for  Gradebook history so I would think that information could be pulled fairly easily if you have someone who knows how to work with APIs.

What is the teacher's rubric attached to? If it is attached to a graded assignment and you have it set to use the rubric for grading, then you could reasonably use the graded_at timestamp for the assignment as the time the rubric was completed.

You could tell it not to count the assignment towards the final and then it wouldn't affect their grade.

The rubrics are tied to submissions, but I have not seen a separate date for when the rubric was completed. There is only one rubric from the instructor per submission, so there is no notion of versioning, which would have a date attached to it.

There is a Canvas Data Services option that delivers near real-time notification of when things happen in Canvas. I didn't have it installed and the documentation has mostly disappeared from the Community to be placed into the tool itself, but I didn't see anything about rubrics. They have submission_created and submission_updated and grade_change. Of those, the definition for the grade_change sounds promising.

The event is emitted anytime when a submission is graded. These can happen as the result of a teacher changing a grade in the gradebook or speedgrader, a quiz being automatically scored, or changing an assignment's points possible or grade type. In the case of a quiz being scored, the `grade_change` event will be emitted as the result of a student turning in a quiz, and the `user_id` in the message attributes will be the student's user ID.

That would give you an event when it happens. You could use the API to fetch the rubric if you need it.

Alternatively, you could use the API to query each course and assignment (that holds the rubric) for those where you are expecting a rubric. That could also give you the rubric if you add the include[]=rubric_assessment parameter. That's going to have less overhead associated with it, but the notification won't happen real-time. There is a chance that a faculty could change their rubric multiple times between your API calls to fetch the data. That may not matter if you only need the date when it happened.
