The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
As a student, can I join a new course by join code with an existing account? Instead of asking my teacher to send me an invitation email.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hi @desintadewir and welcome to the Community! There are a number of ways that students can be allowed to join a course, depending on institution policy and instructor needs. We do use the join code option for clubs and other non-academic courses. However, the join code still needs to be made available to students somehow, so this is normally sent to the student so when they use the code they can select to be a part of the class.
Are you having a particular issue with this process? If so then perhaps someone here has a suggestion but ultimately it would be the institution and/or instructor who needs to make a change.
I hope this helps and best wishes!

I was just given a join code with the opportunity to create a new account (not a link). I already have an account and am just trying to enroll in the course with the join code. Where do I add it? This is unnecessarily difficult...
Please how do I
enroll in a new course with an existing account?
@AZONGPATRICK ...
Enrolling in a course is typically handled via your school's Registration department. Often times (but not always), schools will use their SIS (Student Information System) as the interface for students to enroll in courses. Those enrollments are then automatically sent to Canvas at intervals defined by the school (sometimes immediately, sometimes a few times a day, etc.) Each school that utilizes Canvas as their LMS (Learning Management System) handles enrollments differently, so you'll need to check with your school's Online Learning / eLearning / Distance Education team to see exactly what that process looks like for your school. They should be able to better answer this question for you. Good luck!
