The Instructure Canvas Community is a site for users of the products to exchange their ideas, suggestions, and tips-and-tricks for using Canvas and Instructure's associated products; it's not a general social media site, which sounds like something more on the order of what you're looking for. Perhaps you can ask your school if they'd be willing to host and facilitate a forum where students can gather to socialize?
