The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
What is the difference between distance and displacement?

You have asked this question in a global community of users of the Canvas learning management system software. This question is specific to your course and not the use of the Canvas software and does not belong here.
This appears to be a question from an exam or quiz. We are educators and would not answer it for you because it is something your teacher is trying to assess whether you know.

Thanks - I'm an educator and our district uses Canvas, and I was just testing out the Canvas Community so that I could share info with my students in the Fall. We will likely be in part or wholly distance learning. Is the Canvas Community populated by Instructure staff, faculty, students, or all of the above? Thanks in advance.

Most of the people in the Community are Canvas users. That includes faculty, administrators, designers, developers from all over the world, although most who participate seem to be in the United States. We volunteer our time to help other people with the Canvas software and using it. We do not have access to other institution's Canvas instances.
There are some students, most of which come in seeking help to an issue with Canvas. Very few students live out here and answer questions on a regular basis. Often they are confused and post their discussion questions here instead of their actual discussions in the course or have a question about a specific course or assignment (we can only direct them back to their institution). Others have problems like Safari not working for them (those are the kind we might be able to help with) When questions like the one you put out there appear, we try to make sure not to answer them.
There is a limited number of Instructure employees in the community. The documentation team at Canvas is the most involved and they manage the Community with the help of users with elevated permissions (I'm not one of them). Every now and then you will get a comment from a product manager, engineer, or someone else (in their non-official capacity).
Users of Canvas should start with the Canvas LMS Guides. They contain a lot of answers and people can find them faster than if they ask a question and wait for someone to respond. There is a lot of stuff not in the guides as well.
The Community is about to change the software it runs on real soon (theoretically within the next month) so it probably not look the same in the fall that it looks right now. New Community Almost Here
