Hello,

I've been using Canvas for four years now. But, I've been using it for a fairly linear path. I know of the recent inclusion of mastery paths in Canvas.  But, this is a bit more general.  When learners are given choice to access and practice, what types of opportunities/resources are educators making available? What types of digital learning zones are educators creating?  I'm looking to redesign my Canvas course for next year to allow more exploration in content rather than a predetermined single track.

Hi mohammam‌, and thank you for bringing this great question here! Regarding choice and Mastery Paths,  @kona ‌ wrote up a great example here:

I've gone to even greater extremes with student choice, so that basically everything the students read and write for my courses is chosen by the students themselves. I do everything in the open, so you can browse around and see what you think... and the whole thing basically is running in a big blog network; I use Blogger too (I am now subscribed to your blog!), and my students are blogging also; they mostly choose Blogger as well (although I'm platform neutral; if they want to use WordPress instead, it's all good).

Student choice is probably the learning design principle that is the most important in my learning world, and I am glad to share ideas and brainstorm about this any time! I use Canvas so that students can keep track of their grades and feel anchored in a single jumping-off point... but they are definitely jumping off and pursuing their own questions and curiosity, and I get to learn a lot along the way too. No two semesters are ever the same! 🙂
