When grading short answers / essays, I'm unable to mark student's submissions for revision.

I suppose the extremely inefficient workaround would be to quote the entire submission in the assignment comments and point out errors there (without a text editor to help with formatting).  Such an answer would not surprise me as every basic basic basic ordinary regular everyday classroom functionality issue I've had with Canvas has led to extremely inefficient workarounds.

I just want to be able to have my students submit short answers / paragraphs / essays, and then I can mark them for errors, and then send them back for revision before giving them a final grade --just like I do with every run-of-the-mill pencil and paper assignment...

We're transitioning to Canvas from blackboard, and one of the things I do in blackboard (that seems to be the same in Canvas), is to use multiple attempts.

I grade and provide feedback to essay/short answer questions on the 1st attempt, then students use that feedback to improve their responses on attempt 2 which is then given a second grade. There is a dropdown on multiple attempts, such that you can instruct the system to take the highest grade or average the grades.

Yes.  Multiple attempts is enabled --hence the need for a way to make inter-linear correction marks to help students revise and resubmit...

I misunderstood, but from what I understand, Canvas has markup tools in its docviewer. Is this what you're looking for?

I can't find a "docviewer" associated with any assignment on any page, grader, option list, or setting.

It's part of SpeedGrader, I just played with this feature, and it's great, here's what I did:

Made a dummy assignment, then entered student view and uploaded a document to the assignment. Left student view then went to assignment in Grades. Hover mouse over the assignment name and click the ellipsis, then SpeedGrader that opens the docviewer. (there are other ways to get to it, but this seems to be the fastest)

Cool feature: I was able to have 2 windows open, markup with digital pen on my tablet, and when I looked at my desktop, the markup was there once the tablet auto saved, and I could type in items on the desktop that show up on the tablet.

Major dislike: The latest attempt is shown by default and last grade entered is the grade kept, not the highest scoring attempt, and there is no way to change this.

I have students submitting several assignments using the Rich Content Editor. 

I went to grades...  Found an assignment with several submissions...  Elipsis...  Speedgrader...  No "Docviewer." 

I can see what they wrote, but there is no ability to annotate --only to comment.  There is no "docviewer" anywhere in any menu...

If the students submit using the "Text Entry" option, then the Docviewer options won't show up. The only way for those to show up is to have the students submit an actual file to the assignment.

You've got to be kidding me.  The RCE can't save files, you can't annotate submissions, why does it even exist?  Pencil and paper are 1000x better than the RCE.

Oh wait, I forgot, the RCE works great if you do all your work on a *different editor*, and then paste it into the RCE.  That is the essence of Canvas --it's a fantastic LMS, if you do all your work in a different LMS.

As it happens, my students are specifically prevented from using outside apps to create text entries.  Our school exists in a secure environment, and even Microsoft Word is not allowed for security reasons.  This necessarily means that Canvas is preventing me from being able to annotate my students' work, when we are all using Canvas exclusively.

Sounds like yet another basic basic basic functionality issue with no solution in Canvas.

Greetings! The ability to provide feedback to students directly on their submission and to "Reassign Assignment" (basically send it back to the student for revisions) can only be done with Assignments, not quizzes or discussions. 

If students are submitting to the assignment, then previous submissions and grades are retained. There is a pull-down in Speedgrader (upper right -- "Submission to View") that allows you to toggle between attempts and this shows the grades and feedback provided as part of that attempt. This information is also retained in Grade history.

Yes, but let's say a student receives a lower score on the 2nd assignment attempt, then the lower score is kept in grades, not the higher score, and there is no setting to change this.

For assignments, there isn't a "setting" to use the highest score or first score (like in quizzes), but you can just change the score to whatever you want. For me, when I'm grading, I just give the student the score I want them to have, regardless of which attempt it is.

I'm not sure what you mean by no way to change this. For me, I can put any number I want in the Grade box. I can also update this directly in Speedgrader.
