Hi,
I am trying to make question groups within a Canvas quiz. I have 10 question groups for one quiz, with each question group representing one topic and one question in the quiz. I want Canvas to randomly pull one question from each question group for each student. So each student will get random questions in each topic. It doesn't seem to be working that way. Instead, Canvas quiz presents all the questions in each question group. Can you help with this?
Hello @aburke ...
I was unable to replicate this in my own sandbox course. I created a quiz (using the classic/old Quizzes) interface. I created six questions, and then I created three question groups. I put two questions into each of these questions groups, and each question group was told to select only one of the two questions to display for students...for a total of three questions. I also tested this with the "Test Student" role, and I tried it with a "dummy" student login that we have. Both times, I only saw three questions instead of all six.
Your process does sound correct, so it might be worth a call to the Canvas Help Desk staff to see if they have any other suggestions for you. I wouldn't think there would be limit on how many question groups you could have in a single quiz. How to contact Canvas Support
I hope this information will be of help to you, Ann-Marie. Sing out if you have any other questions...thanks!
Hi, I just managed to get different questions from a question group. First fill the question groups, obviously, and then create the quiz using 'new question group' and then 'link to a question bank' (not sure what the English is, I have the Dutch version on).
I managed to do 2 test in a row and got different questions, so that seems to work. What I cannot find is whether students see different questions, how can you tell? For some reason I do not seem to have access to the guides.
@aburke , for clarification...
You mention question groups in your statement above, but never mention question banks. Question banks have to be set up with questions in them. Then when creating your quiz, you connect the question group with the question bank that has all of the questions for that category. The question groups allows you to decide the number of questions to be used form the question bank and how many points each is question is worth. If this is what you meant, sorry for the unneeded explanation. Just wanted to make sure that the differences between question groups and question banks is understood since questions banks were not mentioned. How do I create a quiz with a question group to randomize quiz questions?
Hi Ann-Marie, I'm a little late to this, but I had the exact same question. I'm still new to Canvas, so the instructions I'm going to post here are probably a little redundant, but they worked.
1. Create questions in question bank
2. Create quiz
3. Go to Questions tab
4. Find Questions
5. Select bank on left side
6. Select questions on right side
7. Add questions to the question group
8. Select New Group from drop down list
9. Click Add Questions
10. Apply your settings
11. Click Create Group
12. Click Add Questions again
13. Click Save & Publish or Save
14. Preview quiz
I hope this helps.
