[ARCHIVED] Searching for users by phone number via the Canvas API

Is there a way to use the Canvas APi to search for a user by their defined communication channels? For example, if I have an app where a user enters their phone number I want to ensure that there is a valid user in Canvas with that phone number before using it.

I've tried the list users endpoint, but it doesn't appear to search the communication channels. Also, the communication channels api doesn't appear to have a way to search across users.
