[ARCHIVED] Student Name instead of Student ID

When viewing the grades for a particular project/module, the "Student Names" show up as a numeric ID instead of the actual name of the user. How do I fix this?

Hi! The Gradebook allows you to filter and display Student Names according to your preference. Check out https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-26487-how-do-i-sort-and-display-student-data-in-the-gradebo...  and see if that helps?

Hi Erin,

Thanks for getting back to me. The issue is that the "name" for some

students is actually a string of numbers (I think maybe their Login ID).

The value for the field is incorrect and I'm not sure how to edit it. For

example, when I sort by name, the top 20 or so are all numbers, and then it

gets into students who have names. Here's a screenshot:

How can I edit the ones with numbers to show their actual name? And why did

it do that in the first place and can I prevent it in the future?

Hi, the student name display may be set by your organization. If you have admin rights, you can adjust the names in the admin panel. If you're an instructor, you won't be able to manage those names as your admin hasn't given you permission—you could always reach out and see if your admin could make an adjustment?

Hi Erin,

Can you let me know who my admin is or how to know if I'm an admin?

Why are those names showing up as numbers in the first place? Some are

numbers and some are names, I'm not sure what the difference is when I

invite them to the course initially.

Hi, Andee,

At the time of your question, I wasn't able to access your account. But I looked into it further just now and you are using a Free for Teacher account and enrolled as a teacher. Therefore, Canvas is your admin, and you won't be able to manage all the usernames for your students. Looks like when they got enrolled in the course, their login ID (or whatever number is being used as a login ID) was also entered as their full name. Students in this situation can edit their own user names in their User Settings page, which would be a start!
