@mfischer , I'd have the student update their internet browser and/or switch internet browsers. We often have students with this type of problem and as soon as they switch to (an updated version of) Firefox or Chrome the problem goes away. We tend to see this if the student is using Internet Explorer, Edge, or Safari.

I am using Canvas in my 6th period class and when I click on the reply box for a discussion I am not able to type in the box. I am using Firefox as my browser and I was wondering if there is any way to fix this issue.
In my case, it took me so long to solve this problem and I had to suffer a lot/ However, one of the possible solution, which worked on my end, was disabling a VPN extension in my chrome browser. When i disabled it I was able to type again. When I enabled it (even when the VPN was turned off), I wasn't able to type. I concluded that was the source of the problem. Hope this helps.
