LTI is short for Learning Tools Interoperability. It is a standard that (among other things) provides plug-in capability for external applications. Within Canvas, a system that uses LTI is often called an external tool.
Although LTI is the name of the standard, a tool that uses the standard is often referred to casually by LTI.
