What does a black exclamation point in a gradebook column means? Here is an example of the ! icon appearing in the grade column for a single homework assignment:

This comes directly from the guides:

The Black Warning Icon [1] notifies you that the final score does not include one of the assignment groups because the group has zero points possible (the warning will tell you which assignment group is affected). This icon only displays in the total column related to assignment group errors. 

You can correct the assignment group warnings by making sure a weighted assignment group has an assignment worth more than zero points, or, if an assignment is supposed to have zero points, adding another assignment with more than zero points to the assignment group.

The Red Warning Icon [2] notifies you that the entered grade is not supported in the grading scheme. Canvas will also display an invalid grade warning message when an invalid grade is entered.

I apologize, as I have actually never seen that exclamation icon anywhere other than in the Total column.  I have done a little digging and have found that this same question was asked back in June and was unfortunately answered the same way.  https://community.canvaslms.com/message/149227-re-what-is-the-black-exclamation-point-in-gradebook-f... 

Is there anything special about that specific assignment? 

I have asked others about this icon and am awaiting a reply.  As soon as I have it I will update you.

This is caused by Turnitin.  It is indicating that there was an error submitting to the similarity service.

As additional information, this typically happens when the student submits a filetype that is supported by Canvas but not by Turnitin. For example, the Pages app on Mac will save in .pages format by default, which works fine in SpeedGrader but is unsupported by Turnitin. The remedy is to have the student use the File-> Export To... option to convert the output to Word or PDF format for submission.

I have this too, but TurnItIn was not active for the assignment. I can't even enter the grade manually! Please let us know what is causing this and how we fix it. Thanks.

 @htdinh ‌, do you use a plagiarism checker such as Turnitin?  You can get that explanation mark when Turnitin or another checker cannot get a score.  Instead of displaying the color for the originality score, it displays what you are seeing.

Thanks, Nick! That makes sense. I used Turnitin for the homework for which the ! icon displays.
