[ARCHIVED] Why is Canvas deleting my students' annotations with no warning?

I was excited about the new "Student Annotation" submission option, but a lot of my students lost a lot of work because they submitted the annotation initially and then submitted another document subsequently.

Why did Canvas erase their earlier annotations when they submitted the new document? My students worked hard on their annotations and were really frustrated when they realized that their annotations had disappeared with no warning. Canvas didn't even have a pop up telling them that their work would be lost if they submitted a new document.

I hope Canvas can fix this bug, because it would be really nice for students to be able to re-submit without losing their previous submissions.
