Canvas recognizes some scientific notations using the e notation. 5e3 is 5*10^3 or 5000. 5e-2 is 5*10^(-2) or 0.05.
There is no easy way to type a times sign ×. It is not supported in a numeric question at all, fill in the blank questions would require that you use a character map or copy/paste a Unicode character from somewhere, and essay questions could allow it through the equation editor. We do not know which way you're instructor has the question set up, so we cannot answer definitively, but I would start with the e notation if it's the kind of question that wants a number answer.
